- The Swamp Funk Quartet specialises in grooving. We inhabit the space on a Venn Diagramme where blues, soul, funk and jazz overlap. Covering artists such as Albert and Freddie King, Booker T, Delbert McClinton, The Meters, Roy Buchanan, and John Scofield, we combine Hammond-and-guitar sound of classic Southern Soul with contemporary grooves.
Me ... I started playing guitar in school growing up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I got around to playing for money in the late 80s in Baltimore and Washington DC.
Eager to make more money in music, in 1985 I emigrated to South Africa, where I got involved in anti-apartheid stuff and studied at the University of Cape Town. I figured this was a great way to get famous as a musician.
In 1989 I started gigging in Cape Town, with blues-rock outfit The Infidels, much to the chagrin of my Muslim friends (PBUT).
Having done somewhat too well in musically in South Africa, in 1993-4 I decided to work in Washington DC, where I played with the Ward Gaines Blues Band (Ward co-authored an acclaimed biography of Little Walter). Surprisingly, we did well in the National Blues Competition.
Which for some reason wasn't to my taste. I missed the wide open spaces of Africa. Even though I had only ever seen Cape Town, which is essentially an over-hyped suburb of London.
On my return to the Mother City in '94, I joined blues-rock band The Groove Kings, which enjoyed success all over South Africa and was signed to the Street Level label (arguing needlessly with them, but eventually becoming cricket and braaivleis buddies). More to the point, I joined original band Woodshed, which made it into the top ten on South Africa's Radio 5, thanks to Andrew Janisch's great singing and songwriting.
In 1997 The Lonesharks were formed, with Dave Ferguson on harmonica, Paul Tizzard on drums, and Yoyo Buys on bass. We became the sensation of the Grahamstown Festival in 1996-97, embarrassing established bands, drawing huge crowds and getting live feeds on the SA Broadcasting Corporation. The Lonesharks continued to gig all over South Africa for several years, including stints at George Worthmore's Blues Room in Johannesburg. We played music we knew.
In 1999 Dave F. left for England, and that was that for the Lonesharks - for the time being.
In 1999 I formed the Swamp Funk Quartet with Paul Tizzard, Yoyo Buys and Tom Fox (of Bright Blue, who created South Africa's great struggle anthem, Weeping). We became a tight outfit, playing a blend of blues and New Orleans-style funk. At one point our acid-blues version of "Mannish Boy" was the most downloaded song on the South African MP3 charts.
Life intervened. Tom left for New Zealand in 2002, and SFQ migrated through some personnel changes, adding a lot of John Scofield to the song list.
In 2006 Dave Ferguson returned from London, and we reformed the Lonesharks. Yoyo had left for London in the meantime, so we recruited "the Big A" Roger Bashew, on bass. For the whole of 2007 the Lonesharks gigged regularly, with a residency at Joburg Bar in Cape Town. We became dangerously tight. In late 2007 I decided to move to Atlanta to be closer to family in the USA.

Welcome to GA. Hope you have some luck on this site. I run a band and have picked off several new people as a result of the networking going on here. My guitarist is in with me thick as thieves for about 17 years but he takes off occasionally. Networking will be key here in ATL. There's a fairly healthy private party scene, I don't know if your into that kind of thing...covers etc. Sounds like you've had an amazing journey up till now :-)
